Challenges

NXP faced several key challenges:

  • Increasing Complexity: The demand for more efficient electric vehicles and advanced driver assistance functionalities has increased the complexity and software content embedded in vehicles.
  • Transition to Software-Defined World: Moving from a hardware-centric to a software-defined world requires increased testing productivity by starting earlier and using more efficient approaches.
  • Interconnected Systems: As the system under test becomes more interconnected with other electronic systems in the car, there is a need for a scalable and efficient testing environment.

Solution

Synopsys VDKs provided a comprehensive solution for NXP:

  • Early Software Development: Enabled software development to start months before hardware design completion, allowing full system bring-up and validation of the software for the entire vehicle.
  • Virtual Hardware ECU Environment: Established a virtual hardware ECU environment for system integration, fault, and coverage testing.
  • Advanced System-Level Debug and Analysis: Provided tools to resolve design and software issues quickly, increasing productivity and eliminating guesswork from the SoC design process.

Results

The implementation of Synopsys VDKs brought significant benefits to NXP:

  • Faster Development: Enabled earlier and faster system and software testing, reducing development costs and increasing time-to-market.
  • Higher Software Quality: Improved software quality and system reliability by enabling more efficient development and testing.
  • Reduced Risk of Recalls: Addressed key market trends and reduced the risk of potential design and vehicle recalls in the future.

By leveraging Synopsys VDKs, NXP has successfully accelerated the development and deployment of real-time features essential for the next generation of software-defined vehicles, ensuring higher quality and reliability while meeting the growing demands of the automotive industry.
